An Investigation into CO2–Brine–Cement–Reservoir Rock Interactions for Wellbore Integrity in CO2 Geological Storage

چکیده
Geological storage of CO2 in saline aquifers and depleted oil gas reservoirs can help mitigate emissions. However, leakage over a long period represents potential concern. Therefore, it is critical to establish good understanding the interactions between CO2–brine cement–caprock/reservoir rock ascertain for leakage. Accordingly, this work, we prepared unique set composite samples resemble cement–reservoir interface. A series experiments simulating deep wellbore environments were performed investigate changes chemical, physical, mechanical, petrophysical properties samples. Here, present characterisation core samples, including porosity, permeability, mechanical properties, determined before after long-term exposure CO2-rich brine. Some further analysed by X-ray microcomputed tomography (X-ray µ-CT), diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive (SEM–EDX). Moreover, variation ions concentration brine at different timescales was studied performing inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis. Although no significant observed permeability treated increased an order magnitude, due mainly increase sandstone component rather than cement or cement/sandstone Mechanical Young’s modulus Poisson’s ratio, also reduced.

At the opening of the Millenium the planet Earth is confronted with a major open question, namely: what will be the result in the nearby future of the soaring interference between human activities and natural environmental processes? There is an increasing sense of alarm about the anthropogenic threats that exert pressure on the environment, especially if projected towards the future with the g...

[1] Deep aquifers are potential long-term storage sites for anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The retention time and environmental safety of the injected CO2 depend on geologic and physical factors and on the chemical reactions between the CO2, the aquifer water, and the host rocks. The pH buffer capacity of the aquifer water and the acid neutralization potential of the host rocks are important fact...

We investigated the interactions between CO2-rich fluids and Mg-silicate minerals using experiments to provide information on reaction rates and to identify potential catalysts for the reactions, and studies of natural analogues to assess the conditions that lead to massive carbonation of ultramafic rocks and thus the potential for field-scale implementation. Key findings from our exploratory w...
